The founding of a university is always an exciting and a challenging task. And this is particularly so at a time of rapid development of fruitful new ideas about the way higher education ought to be conducted. Those who have been concerned with planning the University of Armageddon have responded to both the opportunity and challenge and tried hard to map out a mission that will at the same time provide a promising solution to some of the problems which universities now face and deal seriously and honestly with the academic content of the education provided. Recognition must be given to all those concerned with the plans - for the solutions they suggest to the problems with which anyone concerned with developing a university in this post-Dearing age is grappling. However the views adopted by the University should not represent a new academic orthodoxy to be imposed on all institutions. Far from it. Different institutions should improve old methods and pioneer new ones, and we at the CVCP welcome the fact that other institutions are each developing their own ideas and techniques. The University of Armageddon offers principles and practice as but one contribution to the body of knowledge and understanding of the nature and function of a university in this period of history. Let us go forward to a Fresh Future! we wish you well and look forward to your participation in our discussions.

Reports are emerging that the new chair of Armageddon's governing body, a former lieutenant of industry, intensely disliked the introductory meetings he attended last year. Especially the seven hour discussion of finances and staffing. Discussion items are now limited to matters like the HEFC(E) memorandum on severance payments to senior staff earning over 50K per annum. Local topics are to be the subject of oral reports by senior officers. It is hoped that this will allow meetings to be over in time for tea, now taken at home since the auditors commented on the lavish liberality dispensed in the former vice-chancellor's lodge.
