John Wakeford,
Head, Missenden Centre for the Development of Higher Education
PhD examiners carry at least as much responsibility as supervisors. Yet few have had any serious preparation for the job. So it is not surprising that increasingly PhD candidates are challenging their decisions, most often on the grounds of how they came to make them. Participants will have access to the archive of diaries of candidates' accounts of examination and vivas and their experience of complaints, appeals and litigation. This seminar addresses these issues and provides the opportunity for participants to draw up guidelines for examiners and institutions appointing them, and will therefore be helpful to both examiners and those with responsibilities for ensuring the examination is carried out correctly.
Participants are invited to share topics and problems of interest to their institution.
Free book offer.
